There’s nothing like family outings at ball games— ah, the roasted peanuts, cold cokes and coordinated waves of friendly fans. But what brings us back to those bleachers the most? Hot dogs! (Chili and cheese on mine, please!)
We’ve come up with a few hot dog recipes to help you hit your summer out of the park. Traffic lines and sticky, humid heat optional.
1. Sweet Heat Dog
Start simple with this sweet heat dog! The quick-pickled onions and mayo can be prepared up to a week ahead, so all you need to do is grill up or boil your franks and top them. Tangy sweet and spicy, crunchy cold with hot and steamy. It’s a dog of winning combinations!
Ingredients:
1/2 c apple cider vinegar
1 c warm water
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 red onion
Sriracha sauce (or hot sauce of your choice!)
Mayo
Hot dog
Hawaiian Rolls
Start the quick pickle by whisking the vinegar, water, sugar and salt together. Cut your onion in half, then thinly slice. Place the onion in a jar or bowl and pour the mixed liquid over. Cover and store in the fridge for at least a day, and your quick-pickled onions are ready to top your dogs! (It’s amazing on top of tacos, burgers, salads and more!)
Whisk together the Sriracha sauce and mayo, and slather generously onto the rolls. Slide half a hot dog on one side of the roll and top with pickled onions. Gently press the other side on top, and serve!!!
2. Greek Dog
We love a refreshing and crisp Greek salad on a warm sunny day, so we were inspired to put it in the bun.
Top your dogs right before serving or consuming for optimum crunch and color!
Ingredients:
1 c cherry tomatoes, sliced
1 c chopped cucumbers
1/2 tbsp dried oregano
Olive oil
Salt and Pepper
Hummus of your choice
Feta cheese
Hot dog
Buns
Toss tomatoes, cucumbers and oregano in a bowl. Drizzle olive until just coated and salt/pepper the mixture to taste. Spread your favorite hummus on a bun and place hot dog on top. Spoon a healthy portion of the mixture on the hot dog and crumble feta cheese on top.
3. Guac Dog
Had leftover ingredients from Taco Night (we have a category for that!)? Or maybe you’re really craving guacamole, because really, when are you not? Well, that’s what inspired our Guac Dog! And we amped up the seasonal sweetness by adding in some corn!
Ingredients:
1 white corn on the cob
2 avocados
1/2 red onion, chopped
1/2 lime
Cumin
Cayenne Pepper
Salt and Pepper
Cilantro
Boil the ear of corn for 8 minutes in salted water. Let cool, then hold the cob upright and slide your knife along the core to remove kernels. Toss kernels into a bowl with avocado and chopped onion, then juice lime into the bowl. Season the mixture to taste, spoon onto hot dogs, and garnish with cilantro for extra color and flavor!
Use these dogs as inspiration to get creative! The bun’s your empty canvas. Mix it up with a pretzel bun or ciabatta; swap out the frank for bratwurst or tofu. Show off your dogs by sharing them with us on Instagram and Twitter!
