5 Energy Boosters to Kickstart Your New Year

It’s that time of year where you may need a little extra energy to keep up your new years resolutions. How can you keep it moving and stay motivated to accomplish those big goals you set for the new year? Don’t fret, we’ve got you covered with some creative ways to boost your energy and kickstart your new year.

  1. Switch-up your morning routine

One of the best ways to shake-off the sleepys during those dark winter mornings is to mix-up your morning routine. Instead of rolling out of bed and simply getting ready, try taking some time for yourself with a new activity.

Despite what you may think, working out first thing is a great way to jumpstart your day. It helps increase focus, blood flow, and alertness — sort of like the body’s natural caffeine! Getting a sweat on isn’t the only way to boost your energy in the morning though. Just taking some time for yourself — whether that be a short meditation or an activity you enjoy like reading — can wake up your brain and get your day off on the right foot.

  1. Sip on a mood-boosting drink

Most of us look to caffeinated drinks like coffee to get ourselves going in the early morning. There’s definitely nothing wrong with that (and pro tip: experts recommend intaking caffeine at the same time every day). However, there are other delicious drinks that boost not only the body but also your mood. Some happiness in a cup, if you will.

Our favorite mood-boosting drinks right now are Matcha Green Tea Lattes and Golden Milk. They can be served either hot or cold to your preferences, and are packed with nutrients that promote alertness, calm and health. Try them as your new afternoon go-to!

  1. Incorporate some energizing snacks into your routine

No, we’re not talking about eating a jumbo-sized protein bar at your desk at 3pm. Heavy protein bars and other prepackaged foods can actually bog you down unless you’re about to work out. Instead, snack smarter and keep things light and fresh by packing your own whole ingredients. Slice up some red bell pepper and guacamole for a tangy crunch, or try Greek yogurt and mixed berries for something sweet!

  1. Look away from the screens

It’s great that we carry a supercomputer in our pockets everywhere we go today, but that doesn’t mean you always need to be on it! From the start of our day, we’re bombarded by screens. When you’re staring at them, you blink almost half as often, leading to eye strain and fatigue that affects your brain — and yes — the rest of your body, too.

The solution? Look away from your screen every now and then! The 20-20-20 rule is a popular guideline to make sure you give your eyes some rest, but we also like to get up and move a few times a day to really reset. Try socializing with coworkers at the kitchen table or take a lap around the block. Just be sure to keep that phone tucked away to really give your brain a mental re-charge!

  1. Get enough rest

This one might seem obvious, and yet we so often forget to prioritize getting the right amount of sleep. No matter what you say, the experts agree that seven hours is the minimum that adults need to have the best cognitive, emotional, and physical health.

If you’re struggling to make that number every night, then it’s time to make some changes! If you don’t have a strict bedtime, then set one — and if your bedtime isn’t getting the results you’re looking for, then try going to sleep a bit earlier. Gradually hit the hay earlier by 10 minutes a night until you’re getting enough sleep to keep you going strong all day long.
