Juneteenth is here! This annual holiday marks the ending of slavery in the United States. The name “Juneteenth” is a contraction of June 19. On that day in 1865, Union soldiers brought news of the Emancipation Proclamation (1863) to Galveston, Texas, two and a half years after the proclamation was made. Celebrations are held every year to honor this important day of freedom in American history.
