Cowboys to Craft Brews: 5 Things We Love About Oklahoma City

Hello, OKC! We’re excited to start delivering groceries to the Sooner state today, beginning with one of our favorite cities. It’s no surprise that Oklahoma City is nicknamed “The Big Friendly” — we’re constantly amazed by how warm and welcoming everyone is. To celebrate our arrival, we asked our Shoppers for a few of their favorite things to do in OKC. Whether you’re a local or just in town for a weekend, we guarantee you’ll fall in love with this city just as fast as we did.

Cowboy culture

There’s no better place to honor America’s western roots than OKC, where cowboy culture still thrives today. We love soaking in the excitement at the Historic Stockyards City, home to one of the world’s largest livestock markets, and ending the day with a country music concert at the Rodeo Opry. To get your cowboy look, pick up a pair of Levis and boots at Langston’s (the state’s oldest western clothing store), and get fitted for a custom cowboy hat at Shorty’s Hattery.

Paseo Arts District

One of our favorite ways to see a city is to wander around without a specific destination in mind. There’s no better place to do that in OKC than the Paseo Arts District, the city’s oldest art community. The stucco buildings and clay-tiled roofs make us feel like we’re in Spain, and the art lovers in us go crazy for the endless galleries, art schools, and boutiques that line the streets. Don’t miss the First Friday Gallery Walk at the beginning of each month, when galleries and restaurants host receptions to showcase new work.

Van’s Pig Stand

Thanks to our southern roots, we’re serious about our barbecue at Shipt. We’re in good company in Oklahoma. Our favorite is Van’s Pig Stand (just “Van’s” to locals), which has been delighting OKC barbecue lovers for over 80 years. Don’t miss their hickory smoked ribs and tender, chopped (not pulled!) pork topped with sweet red relish.

The museum scene

Cowboys? Check. Firefighters? Check. Women pilots, pigeons, and banjos? No matter your interests, there’s a museum for everything in OKC. One of our favorites is the Museum of Art, which has one of the world’s largest collections of Dale Chihuly’s breathtaking glass sculptures. Kids love the earthquake simulation pod and the Segway track at the Science Museum (and so do we!). For something quirkier, we like checking out skeletons of over 350 species at the Museum of Osteology.

The Big Friendly

You’ll have to look around a bit for this roaming craft beer bus, but we promise the unique atmosphere is worth the search. Oklahoma’s craft beer scene has exploded in the last couple years, and The Big Friendly showcases some of our favorite local brews, including Roughtail, COOP, and Prairie Artisan. True to its name, the bus is the perfect way to mingle with fellow beer lovers. Grab a stool and a pint, make a friend and don’t forget to admire the amazing interiors of this charming refitted school bus.
