Fake Out, Takeout Favorites

We’ll admit it, we love takeout – and we’re not alone, over half of the U.S. admitted they order takeout at least a few times per month! But as much as we love indulging in the moment, all those takeout bills really eat into the budget. Next time you’re craving your favorite takeout staple, ditch the menu and make it at home with these easy and delectable “fake out” recipes. These recipes pack so much flavor you might never order takeout again. With homemade versions of Orange Chicken and Chow Mein, your wallet and taste buds will thank you!

 

Fake Out Take Out Favorites

Ingredients

Chow Mein

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tbsp Sriracha
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 3 cups cabbage, shredded
  • 3/4 cup carrots, shredded
  • 3 shallots, minced
  • Chow mein noodles, cooked and drained
  • Stir fry sauce
  • 1 cup bean sprouts
  • 3 scallions, chopped

Orange Chicken

  • 4 chicken breasts, cubed
  • 1 cup flour
  • 3 large eggs, whisked
  • 3 cups panko bread crumbs
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups orange marmalade
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes

Directions

Chow Mein

  1. In a small bowl, combine garlic, rice vinegar, soy sauce, ¼ cup water, Sriracha and sugar. Mix with a fork to create stir fry sauce.
  2. In a wok or large pan, combine cabbage, carrots, shallots, ginger, sesame oil, ¼ cup water, chow mein noodles, bean sprouts, scallions and stir fry sauce.
  3. Cook over medium heat for 3-5 minutes.
  4. Serve in your favorite reusable take out container (aka bowl) and enjoy!

Orange Chicken

  1. In a bowl, mix chicken and flour until each piece is thoroughly coated. In a separate bowl, whisk three eggs.
  2. Dip each piece of chicken into the egg mixture, coat with breadcrumbs and then place onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil.  
  3. Bake at 450ºF for 20-25 minutes.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together sesame oil, olive oil, garlic, ginger, hoisin sauce, orange marmalade, soy sauce and red pepper flakes to create orange sauce.
  5. Combine the chicken and orange sauce in a large bowl and mix until chicken in coated in sauce.
  6. Serve over rice, sprinkle with sesame seeds and dig in!
