Father’s Day featuring Shipt Photographer, Kevin L.

From shoppers to members to engineers, marketers, and our shopper appreciation team, it’s the people who make Shipt, Shipt. In this series, we get to know the members of our diverse community, from their favorite meal to share with family to their proudest work moments.

If a picture is worth a 1000 words, Shipt photographer Kevin L. sure has a lot to say! From cooking up delicious food for the Shipt Instagram to highlighting our wonderful partners, Kevin’s creative eye has a key role in the images you see from Shipt everyday. When he’s not snapping pictures of Shipt life, he’s spending time with his two beautiful children. Ahead of Father’s Day, we sat down with Kevin to hear what it’s like to raise his children in his home city of San Francisco. Keep reading to learn more about Kevin’s kids’ love of strawberries, his favorite place to camp on the California coast, and a day in the life of the man behind the camera.

What does your typical day look like?

When I get into the office, I always start my day with a good cup of coffee. I’m not functional until that happens! Then I’ll check my project board to see what needs to be done that day and throughout the week. I’m never really at my desk – I run around a lot balancing different projects so I always get my steps in. Right now, I’m working on a photoshoot for our different CPG partners to showcase various products within the app. On any given day you can find me sourcing products from different retailers, building sets, styling the shoots and even cooking in the office. If we’re featuring steak sauce, I’ll be the one cooking up the steak for the photoshoot! What I really love is that no two days are alike. There’s always something new and exciting, each and every day.

What did you do before Shipt?

I was a freelance photographer, primarily shooting commercial and luxury weddings. I still have certain wedding clients I take on, but I’m not as active freelancing as I once was. I used to do over 12 weddings a year! Now I’ve cut it back to only 3 or 4.

What’s always on your grocery list?

Strawberries – my kids absolutely love strawberries. They’re the easiest snack and can be used to make a wide range of other dishes. Our family loves to use strawberries in everything from jam to shortcake, to simply adding it to yogurt in morning, but my personal favorite is cooking in pies.

How old are your kids?

I have a three year old girl and a seven year old boy. My boy is more cautious and methodical, we think he’ll make a great architect or engineer one day. My little one loves to rock ponytails and a princess dress while playing with cars and running around like crazy. She’s an absolute firecracker!

What’s the photo on your homescreen?

On my computer screen, it’s a stock image! I definitely recognize the irony in that as a photographer. I always have my photo editing software up and plenty of images on my screen, so I never really see the background. On my phone though, it’s a picture of my family in Hawaii. It always brings back great memories.

What’s your favorite place in your city?

I’d have to say my favorite place in the city is Golden Gate Park. I love being outdoors in nature. My family spends about 9-12 weekends a year camping! Living in San Francisco, there’s countless beautiful places to explore just a short distance away. My favorite place to camp is north toward Humboldt county on the Lost Coast. It’s absolutely breathtaking.

How long have you lived in San Francisco?

My wife and I were both born and raised in San Francisco. We’ve seen a lot of change in the city scape and how different neighborhoods have evolved. It’s been great to raise our kids in San Francisco too. The neighborhoods toward the ocean feel more like a sleepy surf town than a bustling city. Similar to a small town or suburb, at our local bakery and coffee shops everyone knows your name. From groceries and food to activities and culture – it’s a very rich environment for kids to grow up in, there’s so much to do!

If you could deliver groceries to anyone in the world, who would it be?

It would have to be Barack Obama. He is one of the world’s most interesting people. I love how he’s talked about his transition into politics and his life before the presidency. I think it’s humanized him a lot. I’d love the opportunity to get to know him as an individual, beyond being a president.

What’s been your favorite project that you’ve worked on at Shipt?

I’ve loved working on social media photo shoots with the Shipt content team. They’re not as uniform as larger brand shoots, they’re much more casual. I get to experiment with different angles that then might impact how we approach future larger photo projects. Shipt really empowers me to flex my creative muscles. I take a million photos over the course of the week – especially ahead of new city launches!
