9 Reasons Meijer Hustles Harder
We can’t wait to partner with Meijer stores!!! So we’re going to take a break from our usual programming to tell about the magic that is Meijer.
1. The Meijer motto.
“A Midwestern, family-owned superstore. Bringing families great food, great brands, great savings and great big smiles since 1934.” They’re basically one big, happy family.
2. It all began with a barber.
Meijer was founded by a humble barber in Greenville, MI. in 1934, during the Great Depression. Motivated by the needs of his barbershop customers, Hendrik Meijer and his 14-year-old son Fred opened Meijer’s Grocery.
3. Behold, the birth of the Supercenter.
Meijer’s “Thrifty Acres” was the nation’s first of the supercenter phenomenon. Customers could then shop for everything they needed in one place.
4. Woman Power!
By 1945, half of all Meijer team members were women. The second Meijer store was Johanna Meijer.
5. Free Prescription Drugs.
In 2006, Meijer began its free prescription drug program. To this day, Meijer offers generic antibiotics, prenatal vitamins, and more to customers for free with a doctor’s prescription, despite insurance or co-pay.
6. They understand that they need you.
Fred Meijer always said, “Customers don’t need us, we need them.” So Meijer treats each customer like grocery store royalty!
7. Meijer works to fight hunger in the ways that they can.
The Simply Give program restocks food pantries all over the communities Meijer serves, while the Food Rescue program donates fresh deli and bakery items to local food banks— keeping it from going to waste and to people who need it most!
(In 2014, they donated 7.4 million pounds of food to local food banks.)
8. Purple Cows.
Meijer has their own dairy production branch called the Purple Cow Creamery. The name was inspired by the ice cream shops inside many Meijer stores.
Starting September 15, Meijer and Shipt will be partnering to bring everything you love about Meijer to your homes and offices. #CueTheDanceParty
