Shipt’s 2020 Holiday Survey Spots Four Key Holiday Trends This Year

This holiday season is like none before and that’s why last month, we surveyed over 1,000 Americans to better understand how their shopping patterns are changing, what their gatherings look like this year and yet, how people continue to focus on the magic of the holidays near and far. 

Already, Shipt has seen people using same-day delivery to help save time and focus on the things that matter most this holiday season. Here’s a peek into the four big takeaways from our survey results:

 1. Safety is priority No. 1 when it comes to shopping this season.

Today, it’s more important than ever to practice safe shopping habits. Our survey revealed that 83 percent of respondents said that contactless shopping is important for them and 45 percent cited safety concerns as something they’re thinking about in the coming weeks when choosing how to shop.

This holiday, 67 percent of survey respondents are considering same-day delivery for gifting, and 58 percent cited convenience as a reason. It’s no surprise that 58 percent cited avoiding lines and crowds as the reason same-day delivery is on the top of their minds this year. 

 2. Families are connecting in new ways.

We loved learning more about the new traditions people are cooking up this year. Over half (53 percent) of respondents will incorporate video calls into their celebrations and 40 percent are embracing family game nights (either virtually or in-person) as a new tradition.

 3. Cooking remains a highlight of the holidays.

Who doesn’t love holiday food? Between the turkey, stuffing, potato latkes and kamaru feast, cooking together is one of our favorite holiday traditions. Our respondents noted that most (65 percent) are planning on cooking a holiday meal, with 25 percent of people even hosting their first holiday this year (good luck)! Shipt saw this come to life with record-breaking business over the Thanksgiving holiday. 

 4. The perfect gift is changing this year. 

Oh, the fun (and sometimes stress!) of shopping for loved ones. This year, we’re seeing a new trend emerge in terms of gift giving: 40 percent of respondents are using their newly learned hobbies for gift giving. We can’t wait to see what you all knit up!

And last but not least, this is our reminder to you to not forget your shopping lists — 40 percent of our respondents forget to buy batteries, followed by tape (38 percent) and wrapping paper (26 percent) — or to use Shipt for any last-minute gifting (or forgotten item) needs!
