Summer is officially upon us and you know what that means – school’s out! If you’re anything like me, the thought may send a chill down your spine. But don’t fret! We know how to keep the kids happy – lots and lots of snacks. And I’m not talking snacks that have to be cooked or that make a mess. I’m talking about the quick and easy kind.

A family favorite is trail mix. It’s simple, healthy, and provides a touch of variety. You can include just about anything like cookies, pretzels, and cereal, or go nuts and include, well, nuts!
One of my family’s go-to brands is Annie’s. They offer delicious, organic snack options – including many that are gluten free! My kids and I are very sensitive to gluten, so this is a very important factor when we are searching for snacks. Today we are going with a sweet and salty mix: Annie’s Cocoa and Vanilla Bunny Cookies, gluten free pretzels, peanuts, and my son’s favorite – Annie’s Organic Bunny Fruit Snacks.
Once you’ve decided on your ingredients, the second part of the equation is figuring out how best to store and distribute the mix. As a mom, a couple of things I take into consideration are 1) ease of use, 2) whether or not it’s child-friendly, and 3) cost-effectiveness. A great solution is a simple DIY snack shaker. Make it yourself by following these 4 easy steps!
What You’ll Need
- An empty applesauce container (including the lid with removable insert)
- An empty half-gallon cardboard container (such as an orange juice or milk carton)
- Scissors
- Snacks
Step 1:
First, cut the spout from the carton.
Step 2:
Next, round off the spout to replace the lid insert.
Step 3:
Then fill with your favorite snacks.
Step 4:
Finally, put the lid on with the new spout insert.
Voila! You have a handy, kid-friendly, and essentially free snack shaker to help curb those kiddie cravings.
