Growing up, I was lucky to spend each evening with my family enjoying a home-cooked meal.
But 42 million food insecure Americans, including one in six kids, aren’t as lucky. Every day, these families need to make trade-offs between buying healthy food — or even enough food — and other pressing needs like housing or healthcare. No one should have to make this decision. It’s an issue that hits home particularly hard for us as an Alabama-grown company. Food insecurity rates are highest in the South, including many markets Shipt serves. We’re trying to do something about it, and we need your help.
September is Feeding America’s Hunger Action Month, a cause we’ve been proud to support since Shipt’s early days. From September 10 to September 16, we will match up to $25,000 in purchases from the non-perishable food category in the Shipt app to donate to local Feeding America food banks — so you can feed your family while helping to feed someone else’s as well. Last year we matched $15,000 in member purchases to provide 165,000 meals to hungry families, and we know we can make an even greater impact this year with your help.
While Hunger Action Month is a wonderful opportunity to rally around ending food insecurity, this is a yearlong cause for us. We constantly work with organizations focused on ending hunger in their communities, and have donated the equivalent of 170,000 meals so far this year to local campaigns like Jones Valley Teaching Farm in Birmingham, Brighter Bites in Texas and Gleaners Community Food Bank in Detroit. Our shoppers and employees have spent over 150 hours volunteering at their local food banks.
