Two “Grate” Choices for National Grilled Cheese Day

In queso you didn’t know, April 12th is National Grilled Cheese Day! At Shipt, we’re celebrating an old classic with two new twists that will make you wish every day was National Grilled Cheese Day (because there’s no such thing as too much cheese, right?). With our fried green tomato and mac & cheese grilled cheese recipes, believe us when we say that we’re bringing you the gouda stuff.

Grilled Cheese – Two Ways


Mac & Cheese Grilled Cheese

  • 2 boxes Annie’s Mac & Cheese: Real Aged Cheddar Shells
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 4 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 8 slices cooked bacon, chopped
  • Sliced sourdough bread

Fried Green Tomato Grilled Cheese

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 large green tomatoes, sliced
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 2/3 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • Butter
  • Vegetable oil
  • Brioche bread
  • Cooked bacon
  • Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • Monterey jack cheese, shredded
  • Chives, chopped


Mac & Cheese Grilled Cheese

1. In a large pot, bring water to boil. Add two boxes of Annie’s Mac & Cheese: Real Aged Cheddar Shells, and cook for 8-10 minutes.

2. Strain the macaroni and mix in the packets Annie’s Real Aged Cheddar, butter, milk, Cheddar cheese and bacon.

3. Evenly pour the mac & cheese mixture into a glass baking dish lined parchment paper.

4. Chill the mac & cheese for 2 hours.

5. Using a knife, cut the mac & cheese into four even squares

6. Spread butter on two pieces of sourdough bread, then flip one piece over and place the mac & cheese squares on top.

7. Cover the mac & cheese square with the second piece of bread so that the buttered side of each piece of bread is facing out. Repeat for all sandwiches.

8. In a large pan, cook each sandwich 2-4 minutes on each side, or until toasted and golden brown.

Fried Green Tomato Grilled Cheese

1. Cut your green tomatoes into 1/2 inch slices.

2. In a bowl, mix together eggs, milk, paprika, and garlic powder. In a separate bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, and salt and pepper.

3. Dunk the tomato slice into the egg mixture, then place in the flour mixture and coat. Repeat with every slice of tomato.

4. In a large frying pan, bring vegetable oil to a boil. Using a spatula, slowly lower the green tomato slices into the vegetable oil.

5. Fry the green tomatoes for 4-5 minutes on each side until crispy, then remove and place on a paper towel to dry.

6. Spread butter on outward-facing sides of brioche bread, then fill with fried green tomato, monterey jack cheese, cheddar cheese, bacon, and chives..

7. In a large pan, cook each sandwich 2-4 minutes on each side, or until toasted and golden brown.

8. Cut your sandwiches in half, and enjoy!
