Thomas Jefferson, America's first wine connoisseur, convinced Italian Filippo Mazzei to establish a vineyard adjacent to Monticello. With the financial support of Jefferson and several prominent colonists, Mazzei founded an agricultural company on the present-day Jefferson Vineyards.
