From the Shipt Kitchen: Red Velvet Cake

You can’t go wrong with a classic like Red Velvet Cake. If you’ve ever tasted it, you know its appeal is multilayered. From its beautiful deep red hue and chocolatey sweetness to the rich cream cheese icing, red velvet is the answer when you’re craving cake. 

Got a lot of birthdays on the horizon? Be ready to celebrate with this crowd-pleaser. And don’t forget the crunchy pecans – they bring it to another level. 

Red Velvet Cake

What you’ll need:

2 8½-inch cake pans

Hand mixer

Wire cooling rack



2 eggs, room temperature

2 cups oil 

2½ cups cake flour

1 cup buttermilk

1 oz red food coloring

1½ cups sugar 

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cocoa

1 teaspoon vinegar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 

Cream cheese icing

1 8-oz package of cream cheese, softened

1 stick of butter (½ cup) 

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 2-lb box of confectioners sugar

1 cup of chopped pecans



 1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF and grease and flour your cake pans.

 2. Add sugar and oil to a large mixing bowl and cream together using a hand mixer. 

 3. Add eggs to the mixture and beat well.

 4. In a separate bowl, sift together cake flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

 5. In a small bowl, mix together red food coloring, cocoa, and vinegar. Add to sugar mixture and beat well.

 6. Continue to gently beat the sugar mixture while alternately adding the flour mixture and the buttermilk until well combined.

 7. Add vanilla to the mixture and mix well.

 8. Pour equal amounts of batter into the cake pans.

 9. Bake at 350ºF for 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out mostly clean.

 10. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in pans on a wire rack for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, carefully remove cakes from pans and allow to cool completely.

Cream cheese icing

 1. In a large mixing bowl, add cream cheese and butter, and cream together with a hand mixer.

 2. Add confectioners sugar to the mixture and beat well. Then, add vanilla and beat again.

 3. Once the mixture is well combined, stir in chopped pecans.

Red Velvet Cake

 1. Once cakes are cooled completely, place one layer on a plate or other serving platter.

 2. Add several spoonfuls of icing to the layer, smooth with a spatula, then place the other cake layer on top.

 3. Using the rest of the icing, cover the cake completely. Serve and enjoy!
